Employment recruiting doesn’t need to be an anxiety-inducing activity. Here are 5 ways to make it less stressful and more successful.

Whether in-house or third-party, employment recruiting can be an essential part of the human resources department for many businesses. Companies that are growing quickly or have seasonal employment requirements rely on recruiters to fill the gaps and bring in the right people for the job.

As you can imagine, this can be a high-pressure, high-stress role. Recruiters need to find people with the right skills, contact them, and engage them with a possible job offer. At the same time, these recruiters are also in competition with other businesses and any incentives people may have to stay in their current roles.

We can’t promise to take all the stress out of employment recruiting, but there are ways to make it less stressful. And when you can get some of the stress out of the picture, your recruiting results will likely improve, as well.

Employment recruiting: 5 Tips to take the stress out of the job

Even though it may seem like employment recruiting is different, at its base, it’s still a sales process. You’re selling someone on the idea that Company X is an excellent place to work and that they will fit right in. There is, of course, much more nuance than that. However, what that means for lowering the stress levels with the job is that recruiters can use many of the techniques that salespeople do. And unsurprisingly, that begins with preparation.

1. Take a breath break. With the exception of yawning, many of us forget to breathe deeply during the day. And yet, a few deep breaths can provide additional oxygen to our brains. Deep, slow breaths can calm the nervous system. Focusing on the breath for just 60 seconds can help us focus our minds. So before each call, or once per hour, or at some interval that works for you, close your eyes and inhale through your nose, counting to 10. Fill your lungs, then exhale slowly, again counting to 10. Do this two or three times, and you can feel the stress dissipate.

2. Be prepared. Preparation is always one of the most important aspects of any employment recruiting call. You need to feel solid on the most common questions and at least have an idea of how to answer those random questions. One of the best ways to do this is to have a command of the job description, as well as other details like start dates, end dates if it’s a seasonal job, the pay range, what benefits the person can expect, and details about company culture.

3. Put on your best customer service attitude. As much as employment recruiting is sales, it’s also customer service. What are the benefits for the person taking this job? How are you interacting with them? Why should they trust your job offer? How quickly are you returning their calls? These are all things that go into making your calls more successful and less stressful.

4. Look through your file of resumes. You might already have a number of people qualified for the jobs you are recruiting for. Look through the files of previous applicants and the people you’ve talked to. There are likely a number of well-qualified applicants that may still be interested in jobs or careers.

5. Keep thorough notes. Like preparation, thorough notetaking is something you do to make future you happy. As a recruiter, you talk to a lot of people in numerous situations. Some will be looking for employment in the future. Some have a specific skill set. You may speak with someone multiple times. In all these cases, thorough notes will help you maintain the relationship with the recruit. Even better, keeping notes can make it easy for someone else to join the conversation without having to start over from the beginning. We all have sick days or vacation days, and there’s no reason a potential employee should have to wait for one specific person to return in order to move forward with a job.

Any one of these tips can make employment recruiting less stressful. Add them all together, and you can make significant progress in enjoying a more peaceful atmosphere at work.
