Use these inspiring insurance agent goals to help you achieve more and grow your career

Whether it’s a new year, new quarter, or new week, the goals you set help determine your future. The right insurance agent goals lead you toward the success you want in your career, regardless of what success looks like for you.

Those goals may be small or large. Without them, though, it’s easy to flounder and drift. We never know how far we’ve come or even if we’re on the right path.

Goals give us direction. They’re landmarks to show us the way and to help us recognize what we’re capable of. Where do we begin, though? What are the “right” goals, and how long should it take to achieve them?

Here are some insurance agent goals to help you start strong and keep going.

The basic psychology behind goal setting

Goals can motivate us. They tap into our competitive nature and our sense of pride in achieving something that requires effort and skill.

Goals can also demotivate and demoralize us. When we set goals that are unreasonable or unattainable, it’s easy to give up or feel like we just aren’t capable. Other goals are so monumental that we don’t know where or how to begin to reach them, so we often quit before we have a chance to make any progress.

For example, if you want to run a marathon, you don’t just get off your couch the day before and decide you’re going to run 26 miles. It’s an admirable goal, but most of us would fail.

If you look at any marathon training app, however, you’ll see that there’s a process. And it starts with small steps. You build mile upon mile over weeks or months. Your “big” goal of running a marathon is broken into multiple smaller goals. You run a 5k, then a 10k, then a half-marathon, and so on.

In other words, the best insurance agent goals, like most goals, are actually a series of goals that are much more achievable in smaller increments. In fact, if you really want to reach your goals, one of the best ways to do it is to set SMART goals.

You can read more about SMART goals here. The main point, however, is that to get the most out of setting goals, the goal needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

So, what are some of the insurance agent goals you can set to start this year, this quarter, this week, this day on a strong point?

7 Attainable insurance agent goals to boost your career

1. Expand your continuing education. Look for continuing education credits that pique your interest or will help you expand your industry knowledge. While it’s tempting to sign up for the quickest, most convenient CE courses just to get it done, you may find that your career benefits from digging deeper and gaining new certifications.

2. Take a customer service course. No matter how great your customer service is, there’s always something new to learn or relearn. Excellent customer service is one of the foundations of a successful career in any industry, especially in industries like insurance, where the relationship between individuals is so prominent.

3. Take a non-insurance class. Why would your insurance agent goals include classes in something like welding, baking, art history, garden design, or guitar? A big part of success in the insurance industry is the connection you forge with customers. Expanding your knowledge and hobbies can help with those connections, as it gives you something outside of insurance to help customers relate to you.

4. Attend networking events. Networking events have come a long way. There are numerous options if you think outside the traditional networking box. Anything from a running club to neighborhood committees to chamber of commerce events can be a networking event. To make this a SMART goal, however, choose a specific event and commit to attending at least once per month.

5. Increase your call volume. One of the best ways to connect with customers and prospects is to pick up the phone and call them. But it’s not enough to say you want to increase your call volume. To make this a SMART goal, you need to get specific. The details will depend on your particular marketing strategy and your time. Some ideas, however, might be to increase your call volume by 10% each month, two hours per week, or some other attainable number.

6. Update your website. You may need to hire someone for this if you aren’t technically savvy. However, your customers expect a modern, mobile-friendly experience with easy navigation, plenty of information, and usable features.

7. Spruce up the office. Whether you work from home, in an office, or hybrid, it’s essential to make your workspace comfortable and inviting. You’re there for much of your week, and a comfortable space can help you focus and enjoy your work more. Buy a few small (or large!) plants. Find a local artist and add a piece or two to your walls. Bring in a record player and keep a stack of records to enjoy while you’re working. Not only will this help you, but these are also items that will make the office more inviting for any customers that come in.

This is just a sampling of the many insurance agent goals that will bring energy and excitement to your work. Try these out, or create your own. Just be sure you have goals to work toward, and you’ll find your career continually progressing.
